Pou Manawa, Auckland International Airport

Pou Manawa is a large sculptural form in the departure area at Auckland Airport. Kenderdine were engaged by Logan Brewer to work with him and Fabric Structures to create this large piece of fabric art concieved by the architects as a story telling device to attract passengers into the retail area in departures.

Kenderdine used their large entertainment lighting knowledge to devise a solution to this great challenge. They worked around the structure and existing building services to install 25 metal halide moving head projectors and 25 LED wash fixtures inside the structure.

The selection of fixtures and control was carefully considered as the installation runs for 21 hours a day 365 days of the year, so low maintenance was a prime consideration.

These units were then programmed over several nights to create a 34 minute story about New Zealand combining movement, custom gobo images and sound to complete the illusion.

The response to Pou Manawa has been wonderful and it has won excellence lighting awards, both in New Zealand and internationally.

Kenderdine are the ongoing maintenance contractor for this installation.
